BD™ Vacutainer™ Serum Tubes are used to obtain serum samples. They are Clot Activator Tubes (CATs) made of durable PET plastic with a Hemogard™ closure.

In order to obtain serum samples from plastic tubes, the tube must have a coagulation activator added. As the plastic surface alone is insufficient to trigger the coagulation within an acceptable time, BD Vacutainer™ plastic serum tubes are coated with silica particles that activate the clotting process. This accelerates clot formation, separating the serum from the clotted blood cells and minimising the risk of fibrin formation that could interfere with test results.
