Deficiency Season: 5 Vitamins & Minerals you Might be Lacking This Autumn

Autumn coloured leaves piled up on floor

The leaves are falling, the weather is changing, and our immune systems are in need of preparation before the winter sniffles commence. We can’t have that happening with Halloween just around the corner!

It is no secret that the UK severely lacks sunlight in the colder months. We need to be aware of our diets and get all the right amounts of each essential micronutrient in order to support and build up our immune system’s ability to deal with any nasty pathogens that might come our way.

Here, we have compiled a list of vitamins and minerals that people commonly find themselves low on as the warmer seasons have faded away:

Vitamin D

Your body naturally synthesises vitamin D when your skin is exposed to sun. However, the UK experiences a considerable lack of sunlight during the colder months (October through to early March). In addition, our geographical location means the little sunlight that we do receive during these months does not contain enough UVB radiation for our skin to be able to produce vitamin D effectively. The NHS (and the UK Government) recommends that adults and children over the age of one should consider taking a daily supplement of vitamin D – especially during autumn and winter.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is vital for supporting normal immune function. It is important to consume plenty of Vitamin C-containing fruits and vegetables as part of a balanced diet and supplement via oral or intravenous means where necessary, particularly during this time of year due to the increased transmission of cold and flu viruses. This micronutrient also aids in the absorption of dietary iron, as well as helping reduce tiredness and fatigue – which come hand in hand with the seasonal fatigue that many experience as a result of shorter days and colder temperatures.

Zinc

Zinc is sometimes overlooked when it comes to essential vitamins and minerals for optimal health. This is unfortunate, as it not only provides immune support, but also has a host of other bodily benefits. These include contributing to normal cognitive function and helping maintain normal hair, skin and nails as the weather gets colder and adversely impacts their hydration and general condition.

Vitamin B12

All B Vitamins play a key role in energy production. However, Vitamin B12 is particularly important to be aware of, as it can only be consumed via animal-based food sources. Those who prefer plant-based or low-meat diets should keep an eye on their B12 levels, and consider B12 supplementation accordingly. Low B12 levels have been associated with seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and related depressive symptoms such as fatigue, mood swings and brain fog.

Iron

With the seasonal fatigue that often arrives in tandem with Autumn and Winter, maintaining your iron levels is even more necessary for your day-to-day wellbeing. Iron is an essential mineral, needed for the production of haemoglobin in red blood cells, which carries oxygen around the body into our muscles and tissues. It helps reduce feelings of tiredness and fatigue, supporting our energy levels. To improve your absorption of dietary iron, increasing your intake of Vitamins C and B12 can help.
