Description
Hartmann’s Solution (Compound Sodium Lactate) for injection or IV infusion.
Hartmann’s solution, also known as Ringer’s lactate solution or compound sodium lactate, is a type of intravenous fluid used in medical settings for various purposes. It contains a specific combination of electrolytes that closely resembles the composition of human plasma, making it suitable for treating dehydration, fluid replacement and electrolyte balance restoration. It can be used in a wide range of clinical situations where intravenous therapy is indicated.
In intravenous nutritional therapy (IVNT), Hartmann’s solution can be used for several purposes:
- Fluid Replacement: Hartmann’s solution is commonly used to replenish fluids in patients who are dehydrated due to conditions such as vomiting, diarrhea, excessive sweating, or inadequate fluid intake. It helps restore blood volume and maintain hydration status.
- Electrolyte Balance: This solution contains electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, calcium, and lactate, which are essential for various physiological functions in the body. In IVNT, Hartmann’s solution can help correct electrolyte imbalances caused by conditions like electrolyte losses from gastrointestinal disturbances or renal dysfunction.
- Acid-Base Balance: Lactate, one of the components of Hartmann’s solution, can be metabolized in the liver to bicarbonate, which helps buffer excess acid in the body. Therefore, Hartmann’s solution can be beneficial in correcting metabolic acidosis, a condition characterized by an accumulation of acid in the body fluids.
- Diluent for Medications / Intravenous Infusion: : In IVNT, Hartmann’s solution may also be used as a carrier fluid for medications or nutritional supplements administered intravenously. It provides a suitable medium for drug delivery and can help dilute medications to the desired concentration for safe administration.
Hartmann’s is a clear and colourless solution. It contains:
Sodium lactate (3.17g/L), sodium chloride (6.0g/L), potassium chloride (400 mg/L) and calcium chloride dihydrate (270mg/L) in water for injection and infusion.
Box of 10 x 1,000ml.
