Description
Hydroxocobalamin is a form of Vitamin B12 used in the treatment and prevention of Vitamin B12 deficiency. The most common cause of Vitamin B12 deficiency in the UK is a condition called pernicious anaemia. This is a condition where insufficient amounts of vitamin B12 are absorbed into your body from the food you eat. This can be because you are not able to absorb it properly, or because you have had surgery which has removed part of your digestive system. This type of anaemia is easily treated by having regular injections of hydroxocobalamin. Hydroxocobalamin is also occasionally used for some rare eye conditions.
For adults, the daily recommended intake of Vitamin B12 is 1.5 micrograms per day and this amount is present in most balanced diets. However, Vitamin B12 only occurs in animal products, not in vegetables, and therefore strict vegetarian or vegan diets that exclude dairy products may result in an inadequate amount, although a deficiency may not be apparent for many years.
Each 1ml ampoule of Neo-Cytamen Hydroxocobalamin solution for intramuscular injection contains 1,000 micrograms (1mg) of the active ingredient hydroxocobalamin (as hydroxocobalamin chloride). The other ingredients are sodium chloride, acetic acid and water for injection.
Vitamin B12 contributes to:
- Normal energy-yielding metabolism
- Normal functioning of the nervous system
- Normal homocysteine metabolism
- Normal psychological function
- Normal red blood cell formation
- Normal function of the immune system
- Reduction of tiredness and fatigue
- Process of cell division
